Ferulic acid, chemically known as 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy cinnamic acid, is a phenolic compound prevalent in the plant kingdom, often found conjugated with mono- and oligosaccharides, polyamines, lipids, and polysaccharides rather than in a free state. It is a significant component in various traditional Chinese medicinal herbs such as Angelica Sinensis and Cimicifuga heracleifolia. Structurally, ferulic acid and its derivatives exhibit variations in antioxidant activity due to different ester groups. Functionally, ferulic acid is recognized for its diverse biological activities, including its role in combating oxidative stress, inflammation, vascular endothelial injury, fibrosis, apoptosis, and platelet aggregation. Recent advancements have explored its biosynthesis using modular designs in Escherichia coli, aiming to enhance the efficiency of production.
