Flavomycin, also known as bambermycin or moenomycin, is an antibiotic used as a growth promoter in livestock, including poultry and swine. Structurally, flavomycin is a glycolipid antibiotic characterized by a polysaccharide portion linked to a lipid moiety, indicating its distinct mechanism of action that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, particularly targeting peptidoglycan formation. This function disrupts the growth and multiplication of Gram-positive bacteria, facilitating improved health and growth rates in treated animals without significant absorption into systemic circulation, which minimizes antibiotic residues. While flavomycin has been praised for enhancing feed efficiency, its use is subject to regulatory scrutiny due to concerns about antibiotic resistance. Research continues to focus on defining safe usage parameters, optimizing its efficacy in animal husbandry settings, and exploring alternative growth-promoting methods that align with public health interests.
