Flupyradifurone is a novel butenolide insecticide characterized by its unique bioactive scaffold, which acts as a systemic agonist of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the central nervous system of sucking pest insects. Developed by Bayer CropScience, this compound is structurally defined as 4-[(2,2-difluoroethyl)amino]-2(5H)-furanone. It is highly versatile in application, effective against a broad spectrum of pests, including those resistant to neonicotinoids. Flupyradifurone's mechanism involves interference with signal transduction, leading to rapid pest mortality. Its approval as an active substance in plant protection products was formalized by the EU in 2015, although concerns regarding its environmental and human health risks have been raised, necessitating ongoing risk assessments.
