Iron regulatory protein 2 (IRP2) is a central post-transcriptional regulator of cellular and systemic iron metabolism. It is a cytosolic RNA-binding protein that binds to stem-loop structures. IRP2 is regulated by iron-mediated proteolysis. Hypoxia is important for normal tissue physiology as well as being a component of several pathophysiological conditions, including heart and cerebrovascular diseases and tumor growth. Because iron and oxygen are closely related, IRP2 also plays a role during hypoxia (low oxygen).
