Isocarbophos is an organophosphorus insecticide and acaricide, widely used to control pests in fruits, rice, and cotton. It is a chiral compound with an asymmetric phosphorus atom, resulting in two enantiomers: R-isocarbophos and S-isocarbophos. The enantioselective bioactivity and toxicity of isocarbophos have been studied, showing that S-isocarbophos has higher bioactivity and toxicity compared to R-isocarbophos, with differences up to 232 times. This enantioselectivity allows for reduced usage of racemic isocarbophos while maintaining effectiveness. Additionally, enantioselective degradation studies have shown that certain bacterial strains preferentially degrade the R-isomer over the S-isomer, which can influence environmental persistence and impact. Understanding these enantiomeric differences is crucial for optimizing its use and minimizing environmental and non-target organism impact.
