The LCN15 (Lipocalin 15) gene encodes a protein that belongs to the lipocalin family, a group of small extracellular proteins characterized by their ability to bind and transport small hydrophobic molecules. LCN15 is a human-specific protein found abundantly in the olfactory mucus. It has been identified as a biomarker for Bowman gland cells in the olfactory neuroepithelium, with its expression correlating with non-degenerated areas of this tissue. The lipocalin family proteins, including LCN15, exhibit significant sequence heterogeneity but possess highly conserved tertiary structures with an eight-stranded antiparallel β-barrel. This structure forms a binding pocket that allows them to transport a wide variety of molecules, including retinol, steroids, and various lipids.
