Both LDHA and LDHB genes are part of the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme family, functioning together to regulate lactate metabolism. These genes show differential expression in tissues, with LDHA being more prominent in skeletal muscle, whereas LDHB is prevalent in heart muscle. Lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) is a gene located on chromosome 11p15.4. It encodes for the A subunit of the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), which is crucial in the conversion of pyruvate to lactate during anaerobic glycolysis. The LDHA gene is involved in metabolic processes and plays a role in muscle function. Overexpression of LDHA is often associated with various cancers, highlighting its significance in metabolic reprogramming of cancer cells. Lactate dehydrogenase B (LDHB) is located on chromosome 12p12.2. It encodes for the B subunit of LDH, which predominantly facilitates the conversion of lactate to pyruvate under aerobic conditions. The LDHB gene is widely expressed in the heart, brain, and kidneys, where it helps maintain cellular energy homeostasis. LDHB serves as a biomarker in certain diseases, including cardiac conditions, where its serum levels are measured to assess tissue damage.
