Hairy Cell Leukemia (HCL) is a rare form of mature B-cell cancer characterized by the presence of abnormal B-cells known as "hairy cells." These cells have a distinct genetic profile that plays a significant role in the diagnosis and management of the disease. HCL includes variants such as the hairy cell leukemia variant (HCL-V) and splenic diffuse red pulp lymphoma (SDRPL), which are often detected through specific immunophenotyping and genetic analyses. One critical aspect of these analyses involves the use of flow cytometry to detect lambda light chain restriction among B-cells displaying bright CD11c positivity. Advances in genetic profiling using techniques like clonal analysis with consensus primer polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for heavy chain genes have further refined diagnostic precision, distinguishing HCL from its variants.
