Netilmicin is a semisynthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from sisomicin, known for its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. It is particularly effective against Gram-negative bacteria, including many strains resistant to gentamicin, and some Gram-positive bacteria such as staphylococci. Netilmicin functions by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis, which ultimately leads to bacterial cell death. It is used in treating infections of the urinary tract, skin, and other structures, and is distributed in extracellular water but has limited penetration into the cerebrospinal fluid. The gene location and structure of netilmicin are not typically discussed as it is a synthetic derivative rather than a naturally occurring compound with a specific gene sequence. Synonyms for netilmicin include Sch 20569, aminoglycoside, semisynthetic antibiotic, sisomicin derivative, antibacterial agent, Gram-negative antibiotic, protein synthesis inhibitor, and gentamicin-resistant treatment.
