Netilmicin is a semisynthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from sisomicin, known for its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. It is particularly effective against Gram-negative bacteria, including many strains resistant to gentamicin, and some Gram-positive bacteria such as staphylococci. Netilmicin functions by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis, which ultimately leads to bacterial cell death. It is used in treating infections of the urinary tract, skin, and other structures, and is distributed in extracellular water but has limited penetration into the cerebrospinal fluid.
