Profenofos is an organophosphate insecticide widely used in agriculture to control pests such as aphids, cotton bollworms, and spider mites. It functions by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, leading to the accumulation of acetylcholine in synapses, which disrupts nerve function in insects. Profenofos is favored over chlorpyrifos due to its lower toxicity and shorter environmental half-life. Structurally, it is characterized by a phosphorus atom bonded to an ethyl group and a phenyl group, with a sulfur atom double-bonded to the phosphorus. The compound is often detected in surface waters and soil, posing risks to non-target organisms, including aquatic life. Research has focused on its biodegradation and detoxification pathways to mitigate environmental impacts.
