Prometryn is a herbicide belonging to the chemical class of sulfur-substituted triazine or thiomethyl herbicides, known for its application in controlling weeds in agricultural settings. It is synthesized through successive N-alkylations of cyanuric acid, incorporating a thiomethyl group via mercaptan, and reacting propazine with methylmercaptan in the presence of sodium hydroxide, followed by treatment with dimethyl sulfate. Prometryn exhibits acute toxicity, with bioaccumulation primarily in the liver, followed by gill, muscle, and blood, indicating its potential for environmental persistence and impact on aquatic organisms. Studies have shown that prometryn can exacerbate the effects of heat stress on photosynthetic organisms, leading to increased photosynthetic toxicity. Additionally, molecular docking studies have identified potential targets of prometryn, highlighting its toxic mechanisms affecting development and reproduction in marine zooplankton, which underscores the ecological risks associated with its use.
