Propranolol is a non-selective beta adrenergic antagonist developed for the treatment of various cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension, angina, atrial fibrillation, myocardial infarction, and pheochromocytoma. It is also utilized for managing migraine, essential tremor, and hypertrophic subaortic stenosis. The gene encoding propranolol's target, the beta-adrenergic receptor, is located on chromosome 5q32-q34. Structurally, propranolol is characterized by its ability to block beta-adrenergic receptors, thereby inhibiting sympathetic nervous system activity and reducing heart rate and blood pressure. Functionally, propranolol's antagonistic action on beta receptors makes it effective in reducing anxiety and preventing angina. Synonyms for propranolol include Inderal, Avlocardyl, Dociton, Deralin, Betachron, Propanolol, Anaprilin, and Bedranol.
