Pyrethroids are synthetic derivatives of natural pyrethrins, primarily used as insecticides due to their high efficiency and low toxicity. Structurally, pyrethroids mimic the natural pyrethrins found in plants like Tanacetum cinerariifolium, but have been extensively modified to enhance stability and insecticidal activity. These compounds function by targeting the voltage-gated sodium channels in the nervous system of insects, leading to paralysis and death. Pyrethroids are widely used in agriculture and household pest control, offering an alternative to more toxic pesticides such as organophosphates. Despite their benefits, concerns about environmental persistence and potential neurotoxicity in mammals have been raised, necessitating careful management of their use. Common pyrethroids include permethrin, cypermethrin, and deltamethrin, each with unique structural and functional properties tailored for specific applications.
