The SLC25A33 gene belongs to the solute carrier family 25 (SLC25), which is the largest family of mitochondrial transport proteins comprising 53 members. The SLC25A33 gene encodes a mitochondrial transporter responsible for the transport of pyrimidine nucleotides, specifically deoxyadenine nucleotides, across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This transport is crucial for nucleotide salvage pathways, ensuring the synthesis and maintenance of mitochondrial DNA. SLC25A33 also plays a significant role in cellular energy metabolism, linking cytosolic and mitochondrial nucleotide pools. Mutations or dysregulation of this gene can impact mitochondrial function and have been implicated in various metabolic disorders and mitochondrial diseases.
