A ubiquitous human and animal pathogen, salmonella is the causative agent of salmonellosis, a disease which is common throughout the world. The disease is usually not severe in humans, but can occasionally cause serious systemic infections which require antibiotic treatment. As salmonellosis is a zoonosis with a large animal reservoir, contaminated food is by far the most common mode of transmission of non-typhoidal salmonellae. The large and varied animal reservoir of salmonella has made control of salmonellosis a difficult task. While an effective vaccine does exist against typhoid fever, there is none against non-typhoidal salmonellosis.
