Thiamethoxam is a neonicotinoid insecticide belonging to the thianicotinyl subclass, developed as part of an optimization program on neonicotinoids initiated in 1985. It is characterized by its nitroimino-heterocycle structure, specifically 4-nitroimino-1,3,5-oxadiazinanes, which contributes to its efficacy as an insecticide. Thiamethoxam functions by targeting the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in insects, leading to paralysis and death. Its biodegradation has been studied using various bacterial species such as Pseudomonas spp. and Escherichia coli, which can utilize thiamethoxam as a carbon or nitrogen source, achieving significant removal from aqueous media. Additionally, the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium has been shown to transform thiamethoxam in co-culture systems with siderite, highlighting its environmental implications and potential for bioremediation.
