Tylosin is a 16-membered macrolide antibiotic primarily used in veterinary medicine to treat infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria and mycoplasmas. It functions by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Tylosin is produced by the bacterium Streptomyces fradiae, and its biosynthesis involves the conversion of tylactone, an intermediate excreted by the bacterium, into tylosin. The genetic information for tylosin production has been sequenced in hyperproducing strains such as Streptomyces xinghaiensis TL01, which aids in enhancing its production through genetic manipulation. Tylosin is formulated as tylosin tartrate or tylosin phosphate for therapeutic use in animals like pigs, cattle, dogs, and poultry.
