Yellow fever virus (YFV) is an RNA virus belonging to the genus Flavivirus in the family Flaviviridae. YFV measures 40-60 nm in diameter and has a spherical, enveloped structure containing a single-stranded positive-sense RNA genome. The genome encodes three structural proteins (C, prM/M, and E) and seven nonstructural proteins (NS1, NS2A, NS2B, NS3, NS4A, NS4B, and NS5). YFV is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and is endemic in tropical regions of Africa and South America. It causes yellow fever, a hemorrhagic disease characterized by symptoms such as fever, jaundice, hemorrhage, and organ failure. Pathogenesis involves liver infection leading to hepatocyte and Kupffer cell damage, with the virus utilizing specific genes and molecular mechanisms for neurotropism and viscerotropism.
