Analytical Possibilities Before, During and After the Recycling of Lithium-ion Batteries

Speaker: Dr. Sascha Nowak, University of Münster

Analytical methods are widely used for the characterization of lithium-ion batteries. However, they also play a critical role in battery recycling—whether it’s for initial assessment, process monitoring, or analyzing waste streams. This webinar will highlight key analytical techniques and the valuable information they can provide throughout the recycling process.

Comprehensive Characterization of Electrolytes in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Speakers: Dr. Daniel Kutscher, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Dr. Simon Goeckler, Thermo Fisher Scientific

The efficiency and reliability of lithium-ion batteries are heavily influenced by the composition and presence of impurities in their electrolytes. This webinar focuses on the comprehensive characterization of both major components and trace impurities using advanced analytical techniques, including gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), ion chromatography mass spectrometry (IC-MS), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). GC-MS is used to separate and detect volatile organic compounds, IC-MS identifies ionic species, and ICP-MS detects trace metal impurities.

Together, these techniques provide a detailed understanding of the electrolyte, critical for improving battery performance and extending lifespan. Case studies and experimental insights highlighting the importance of this integrated approach will also be shared.
