Discover proven strategies to secure funding for a new electron microscope

Navigating the evolving funding landscape in the U.S. is crucial for researchers seeking support to acquire electron microscopes. To help you explore funding opportunities, watch our webinar about securing capital equipment funding for new electron microscopy (EM) technology.

Here is an overview of the program:

Anne W. Sylvester (Director of Research, Marine Biological Laboratory) – Former NSF Program Director, sharing strategies to maximize grant applications and navigate government funding opportunities.

Vitor Hugo Balasco Serrão (Director, Biomolecular Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility, UC Santa Cruz) – Presenting creative approaches to securing funding for core facilities and labs, building a CryoEM community, and ensuring long-term sustainability from a business perspective.

Eliza Nieweglowska (Sr. Scientist, CryoEM, Thermo Fisher Scientific) – Presenting various resources from Thermo Fisher that aid researchers in securing capital equipment funding, including financing options offered by Thermo Fisher.

Don't miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights and secure funding for your next electron microscope!

About the speakers

Anne W. Sylvester, Director of Research, Marine Biological Laboratory

Anne W. Sylvester is the Director of Research at the Marine Biological Laboratory. Her role is to oversee the research enterprise through short and long-term strategic planning. The position includes facilitating the success of resident and visiting research programs and research support services, guiding research partnerships, identifying funding opportunities, and coordinating research efforts that align with the MBL’s scientific vision. Anne received her PhD from the University of Washington, where she conducted graduate research at the UW Friday Harbor Marine Laboratory.

Vitor Hugo Balasco Serrão, Director of the Biomolecular Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility, UC Santa Cruz

Vitor Hugo Balasco Serrão is the Director of the Biomolecular Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility at UC Santa Cruz. With a strong background in biophysics and structural biology, his expertise spans single-particle analysis (SPA-cryoEM), subtomogram averaging (STA-cryoET), and micro-electron diffraction (microED). Vitor earned his BS, MS, and PhD in Biomolecular Physics from the University of São Paulo in São Carlos, Brazil, and an MBA in entrepreneurship from Babson College in Boston, USA. His career includes two postdoctoral appointments at Harvard Medical School and the University of Toronto, as well as internships at Utrecht University and Leiden University.

Eliza Nieweglowska, Sr Sales Development Representative, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Eliza is a senior scientist in cryo-EM at Thermo Fisher Scientific. She completed her PhD at the University of California, San Francisco with Dr. David Agard, developing extensive expertise in SPA and helping to manage the cryo-EM core. Eliza is passionate about supporting the scientific community through mentorship and education. In her role at Thermo Fisher, she applies her technical expertise to support the broader EM community on the West Coast of the US by discussing the latest developments in cryo-EM and connecting researchers with resources to advance their projects.
