Catalyst Characterization with Electron Microscopy

Live webinar

Date: March 19, 2026

Time/Time zone:

Session 1: 5:30 p.m. JST | 9:30 a.m. CET

Session 2: 9:00 a.m. PDT | 5:00 p.m. CET

Quantify the nanoscale properties that drive catalytic performance using advanced electron microscopy and image analysis

In this webinar, you will learn how electron microscopes and image analysis software can empower you to comprehensively characterize your catalysts and supports, gaining deeper insights into their properties and performance over time.

Electron microscopy enables visual insights on the nanostructures in the materials used for catalysis. In combination with imaging data interpretation software, you can numerically analyze material porosity, particle distribution, composition, and mutual distance, and you can analyze the distribution of different materials and phases and how they interact.

Explore and characterize your catalysis material’s behavior and optimize your processes to support robust chemical activity.

Register for this webinar to learn how to:

  • Numerically characterize support porosity, tortuosity, and flow dynamics
  • Evaluate catalyst particles distribution and their mutual distance and accessibility to reactant
  • Characterize chemistry and structure of your catalysts and supports

About the speakers

Dirk Laeveren, Market Development Manager, Energy Materials, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Dirk Laeveren is Market Development Manager for Catalysis and Green Hydrogen at Thermo Fisher Scientific. With a strong background in imaging and extensive experience in microscopy, Dirk focuses on leveraging analytical techniques to enhance the production of Clean Hydrogen through electrolysis and its application in Fuel Cells.

Bartlomiej Winiarski, PhD, Staff Scientist, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Dr. Bartlomiej Winiarski received his M.Sc. in Materials Science from AGH-University of Science and Technology, Krakow, Poland, and holds a Ph.D. in Mechanics of Composite Materials from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. A 2014 R.E. Peterson Award recipient, he has authored 40+ papers and specializes in advanced 3D materials characterization and sub-micron stress analysis. He has held research roles at the University of Manchester and remains affiliated with the University of Aberdeen.

Alex Hall, PhD, Avizo Software Product Expert, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Dr. Alex Hall is an expert in visualization and analysis for 3D microscopy techniques. A background in biology and evolution research introduced him to 3D segmentation methods for X-ray CT. This led to his current focus on clean energy, composites, polymers, ceramics, and metals projects. He brings broad expertise to difficult projects that require image segmentation and multimodal analysis.

Luigi Raspolini, Product Marketing Manager, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Luigi is a process engineer working in materials science and characterization. With a background in spectroscopy and electron microscopy, he helps customers find the right tools to convert datasets into actionable data, track improvements, and identify imperfections in manufacturing or research processes.
