Environmental contaminants can impact air, soil, buildings, and other materials, creating risks for human health, worker safety, and regulatory compliance. Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XRF analyzers provide rapid, non-destructive elemental analysis to help environmental professionals identify, characterize, and manage contamination directly in the field.
When contamination is suspected, timely decisions are critical to minimize exposure risks, prevent the spread of hazardous materials, and support effective remediation and compliance efforts. Unlike traditional laboratory testing, which can delay results by days or weeks, Niton analyzers deliver immediate, actionable data that enables faster decision-making and more efficient project execution.
From lead paint inspections and airborne particulate analysis to soil contamination assessment and remediation support, Niton analyzers provide reliable, laboratory-comparable results that help environmental professionals protect workers, safeguard communities, and confidently manage environmental challenges.
Relying solely on time-consuming, off-site testing labs is simply too risky when personal and public safety is at stake. Whether you need to analyze lead dust wipes to determine the spread of contamination, analyze air filters to help protect workers from airborne exposure to high levels of pollutants, or prevent exposure to asbestos, Thermo Scientific Niton XRF analyzers can provide immediate, definitive and defensible results for airborne contaminant analysis.
From contamination assessment and exposure monitoring to remediation verification and material screening, Niton XRF analyzers support a broad range of environmental health and safety applications. Their fast, non-destructive analysis capabilities help inspectors, industrial hygienists, contractors, and environmental professionals make informed decisions on-site, protect workers and occupants, reduce project delays, and maintain confidence in compliance and risk-management programs.
Government regulations and growing public awareness have made lead paint testing an essential part of environmental health and safety programs. Lead exposure remains a significant health risk for both children and adults, while professionals involved in renovation, demolition, maintenance, and repair projects face additional risks from lead-contaminated dust and other hazardous materials. Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XRF analyzers deliver fast, accurate, and reliable lead paint analysis directly in the field, helping organizations assess risk, support compliance, and make informed decisions without the delays and costs associated with laboratory testing.
Select Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XRF analyzers are designed to meet the rigorous demands of lead paint inspection across residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional environments. Trusted by regulatory agencies and environmental professionals worldwide, these analyzers support a wide range of applications, including property assessments, renovation and maintenance planning, hazard identification, compliance verification, and exposure prevention programs. By providing immediate results and eliminating many of the limitations of traditional testing methods, Niton analyzers help protect workers and occupants, streamline project workflows, and support confident decision-making in the field.
Key advantages include:
Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) testing is the most common and reliable method used by certified lead inspectors. A handheld XRF analyzer emits X-rays that detect lead content in the paint without damaging the surface. Niton analyzers provides an instant reading in milligrams per square centimeter (mg/cm²) -- showing whether the paint exceeds the EPA threshold of 1.0 mg/cm² for lead-based paint.
Airborne contaminants enter soil through atmospheric deposition, where polluted particles and gases settle from the air. They can fall directly as dust (dry deposition) or be washed down by rain and snow (wet deposition). Emissions from industry, vehicles, and fires release metals and chemicals that travel long distances before settling. Once deposited, these contaminants can accumulate in topsoil, spreading through runoff and posing long-term risks to plants, animals, and humans.
The identification and remediation of soil contamination is a major challenge. Toxic metals and other contaminants remain in the soil and can harm residents for generations to come. That’s why the U.S. EPA and other regulatory agencies rely on Thermo Scientific Niton X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers, from preliminary site investigation to site remediation to clearance testing. Niton analyzers allow you to analyze all 26 elements listed in the U.S. EPA Method 6200 in a single analysis, and the non-destructive nature of the test also allows identical samples to be sent to the laboratory for confirmatory testing, as required (5% of all samples per EPA 6200).
Achieve rapid, qualitative, and semi-quantitative soil testing results to quickly profile contaminant levels and determine remediation boundaries. Niton analyzers are an ideal tool for Brownfield evaluation because they provide immediate identification and accurate characterization of the eight Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) metals.
Test bagged or prepared soil samples to gain a more homogenized, representative sample from the collection site. Thermo Scientific™ sample preparation tools can be used for true lab-grade analytical data.
Monitor and adjust remediation efforts on-the-spot, eliminate failed clearances, and minimize hazardous waste treatment and disposal by identifying materials that may require Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) analysis. Niton XRF analyzers provide multi-element quantification ranging from magnesium through uranium.
