Whether you're advancing your biopharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities or seeking to optimize existing processes, Thermo Scientific single-use bioprocessing equipment and automation solutions enable exceptional performance, reliability, and quality.
Designed and manufactured for easy integration and customization across upstream and downstream bioprocessing workflows, our bioprocessing equipment offers ergonomic, scalable solutions that prioritize quality, flexibility, and efficiency with speed-to-market, sustainability, and risk mitigation as top priorities.
Our controllers and hardware run on Emerson DeltaV data management solutions, allowing for flexibility in operating systems with the integration of modular hardware, novel single-use sensors, and advanced bioreactors for strategic and streamlined bioprocess control.
Single-use technology is used at every step from media and buffer preparation through final purification. Single-use mixers use disposable bags, liners, or rigid containers and can be used for liquid/liquid and liquid powder mixing. Cells that produce biologics are grown in single-use bioreactors. Downstream concentration and purification steps are performed with single-use centrifugation (e.g. DynaSpin Single-Use Centrifuge) and chromatography (DynaChrom Single-Use Chromatography System).
Unlike re-usable systems that are often open at different points in the workflow, many single-use systems use closed tubing (fluid management systems) to transport bioprocessing fluids from one step in the workflow to the next, significantly reducing contamination risk.
Like most single-use bioprocessing equipment, The DynaSpin Single-Use Centrifuge has disposable components. It uses a unique single-use Magnetic Rotor and pump design to maintain a closed, automated, single-use system.
Single-use chromatography systems like the DynaChrom Single-Use Chromatography System deliver bioprocessing fluids to the column using single-use fluid transfer assemblies. Single-use filters and pre-columns can be integrated into the systems for better efficiency.
By definition, single-use equipment has disposable components. The environmental impacts of these are often less than the impact of cleaning solutions, water and electricity required to properly clean re-usable equipment between runs. Some equipment such as the DynaSpin Single-Use Centrifuge replace steps using other disposable equipment like filters.
Systems are available for as little as 1 L up to about 5,000 L. The modular design of single-use equipment saves space reducing the need for buildouts. Equipment can be multiplexed to achieve larger volumes.
Factors to consider include integration capabilities, process control, regulatory compliance, scalability, and ease of use. For example, Thermo Scientific TruBio Bioprocess Control Software is powered on the DeltaV Distributed Control Platform from Emerson, widely known for integration, validated for GMP, 21 CFR Part 11 compliant, and requires no programming or scripting.
