Thirty Years of Thermal Cycler
Amazing scientific advancements have been made using Applied Biosystems thermal cyclers, from expanding our knowledge of human evolution, to sequencing human and many other genomes, to understanding genetic variation and drug efficacy in human disease research. We’ve been designing and manufacturing thermal cyclers since the first commercial thermal cycler, the TC1, in 1987. Over the decades we have continued to innovate, introducing many advances in block technology and intuitive graphical user interfaces. These innovations have made our customers’ research and scientific advancements possible—we’ve been honored to be part of your journey.

Meet our innovators

Kenneth Tan
Sr. Product Manager

Keneth Tan

Kenneth has 20 years of experience in PCR-related products. He started his career as a project engineer responsible for thermal cycler technology transfer to manufacturing. He moved onto developing thermal cyclers as an R&D system engineer and then managed PCR and qPCR thermal cycler programs. Currently he is a thermal cycler and PCR plastics product manager. Kenneth holds seven patents related to Applied Biosystems VeriFlex temperature control technology, as well as to thermal cycler temperature uniformity.

Vincent Choo
Program Manager, Strategy & Portfolio Management

Vincent Choo

Vincent is a mechanical engineer and began working in thermal cycler design in 2001, focusing on thermal block module and enclosure design for the Applied Biosystems 9700 and Veriti Thermal Cyclers. He has since moved into program management, launching the ProFlex and SimpliAmp Thermal Cyclers in 2013, and the Automated Thermal Cycler in 2016.
Vincent holds two patents related to Applied Biosystems VeriFlex temperature control technology.

Bernard Boo
Sr. Manager, Engineering

Bernard Boo

Bernard is a systems engineer and began working in thermal cycler performance optimization in 2009. He then moved into leading mechanical design in 2014 and collaborated on the SimpliAmp Thermal Cycler design. Bernard holds two patents related to Applied Biosystems qPCR thermal cycler blocks, thermal control units and optical lenses.

CK Lim
Sr. Manager, Engineering

CK Lim

CK began working in thermal cycler design in 2002, focusing on thermal control optimization and architecture design for scalable thermal cycler implementation. CK holds eight patents related to Applied Biosystems VeriFlex temperature control technology, thermal cycler temperature uniformity, as well as Applied Biosystems qPCR thermal cycler blocks, thermal control units and optical lenses.
