The non-reactive Alexa Fluor and Alexa Fluor hydrazide derivatives may be used for injection site visualization. Other options include the fluorescent polystyrene microspheres, FluoSpheres, and dye-conjugated dextrans. The hydrazide derivatives and 'fixable' dextrans are retained by cross-linking using an aldehyde-based fixative.

Alexa Fluor free acid compounds (Cat. Nos. A33076, A33077, A33078, A33079, A33080, A33081, A33082, A33083, A33084, A33085) should be stored at -20 degrees C and protected from light until it is reconstituted.
To reconstitute, dissolve the Alexa Fluor free acid compound in aqueous buffer (e.g., PBS), or high-quality, anhydrous dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) or dimethylformamide (DMF) at a final concentration of 1–10 mg/mL. Once reconstituted, this solution is stable for 1 year, when stored at 2-8 degrees C and protected from light.

The imaging time course varies with the nature of the injected agent. Vascular tracers are visible in the blood vessels immediately after injection and may be imaged for several hours. Conjugated whole IgG antibodies reach their targets within a few hours of injection and may be imaged for several days.
