Ultraviolet induced DNA damage has been linked with mutagenesis and skin carcinogenesis. UV radiation may damage DNA directly through the creation of lesions such as cyclobutane thymine dimers. Thymine dimers are thus a unique marker of UV exposure, and may be measured using antibodies raised against them.
