Astrocytes are a type of glial cell found in the brain and spinal cord. They hold various roles, primarily supporting neurons. They are the most abundant glial cells in the brain and closely associate with neuronal synapses, regulating the transmission of electrical impulses. Astrocytes function in the biochemical support of endothelial cells that form the blood-brain barrier, provide nutrients to nervous tissue, maintain the extracellular ion balance, and play a role in the repair and scarring process of the brain and spinal cord following traumatic injuries.
