Pentadecafluorooctanoic acid, commonly known as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), is a synthetic fluorinated organic acid belonging to the group of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Structurally, PFOA consists of a non-branched chain of eight carbon atoms fully saturated with fluorine atoms, which imparts unique physicochemical properties such as high thermal stability and resistance to degradation. PFOA is primarily used in the production of fluoropolymers, including polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and is known for its persistence in the environment due to its inability to break down naturally. This characteristic leads to bioaccumulation in living organisms and has raised concerns regarding its potential toxicological effects on human health and the environment. Research continues to explore the environmental fate, behavior, and health impacts of PFOA, aiming to develop safer alternatives and remediation strategies.
