Pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB) is a hexa-substituted benzene compound characterized by a benzene ring with a nitro group (-NO2) and five chlorine atoms. It exhibits a quasi-planar structure and forms a layered rhombohedral configuration below its melting point, allowing molecular rotation around a six-fold axis. PCNB is primarily used as an organochlorine fungicide with broad antifungal activity, similar to chlorothalonil, by inhibiting fungal enzymes such as cytochrome reductase through electrophilic interaction with thiol groups. It is persistent in soils due to its high chemical stability, leading to bioaccumulation in plants, which poses risks to food safety and human health. PCNB's fungicidal activities have been tested against various fungi, including Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigatus, although derivatives like pentachlorophenylmethylsulfone show increased fungistatic activity.
