Orange II, also known as Acid Orange 7 or C.I. 15510, is a synthetic azo dye commonly used in coloring textiles, paper, and leather, as well as in some biological staining applications. Structurally, Orange II contains an azo linkage (-N=N-) between aromatic rings, which imparts its distinctive orange color. Its properties enable strong adherence to fibers, making it particularly useful in dyeing processes requiring vibrant and lasting pigmentation. While historically used in food, regulatory changes have largely phased out its use in edibles due to concerns about azo dyes' potential health impacts, such as allergic reactions and carcinogenicity from metabolized aromatic amines. Environmental considerations include managing wastewater containing azo dyes like Orange II to prevent ecological harm. Research focuses on developing efficient degradation methods and exploring safer alternatives to mitigate negative impacts associated with azo dye usage.
