Orange I, also known as C.I. Acid Orange 20 or alpha-naphthol orange, is a synthetic azo dye primarily used in dyeing textiles, leather, and paper. The structure of Orange I includes an azo group (-N=N-) linking aromatic rings, imparting the vibrant orange color characteristic of this dye. Originally utilized for coloring foodstuffs, Orange I has largely been phased out in food applications due to revised safety regulations concerning azo dyes and their potential health impacts, such as allergic reactions and carcinogenicity when metabolized into aromatic amines. In industrial applications, Orange I remains valuable for its strong adherence to fabric and resistance to fading. Environmental considerations necessitate managing waste and effluents containing azo dyes like Orange I to minimize ecological impacts.
