Leucomalachite green is the major reduced metabolite of malachite green, a compound used as a fungicide in aquaculture. It is absorbed and metabolized in fish, where it persists as the main residue in tissues for several months. Leucomalachite green has lower cytotoxicity compared to malachite green, but it may interfere with cell metabolism or redox balance, posing potential harm as a food contaminant. Studies suggest that malachite green and its metabolites, including leucomalachite green, are metabolized to primary and secondary arylamines in rodent tissues, which may contribute to adverse effects following exposure. The compound's presence in fish is concerning due to its suspected role as a tumor promoter both in vitro and in vivo.
