Indometacin, also known as indomethacin, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) primarily used to reduce fever, pain, stiffness, and swelling. It functions by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins, thereby reducing inflammation and pain. Indometacin is often formulated with various delivery systems, such as biomimetic silica xerogel and self-assembled prodrug nanoparticles, to enhance its release and reduce toxicity. These formulations aim to improve its bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy while minimizing gastrointestinal side effects. Indometacin's gene-related information is not directly applicable as it is a small molecule drug rather than a biologic or biosimilar. However, its analogs are being synthesized to selectively inhibit COX-2, offering potential for reduced ulcer liability and improved safety profiles.
