Chlorsulfuron is a sulfonylurea herbicide primarily used to control post-emergence grass and broadleaf weeds by inhibiting acetolactate synthase (ALS), an essential enzyme in the biosynthesis of branched-chain amino acids. It is highly effective at low usage rates and exhibits crop selectivity, making it popular in agricultural applications. However, its persistence in soil can lead to weed resistance and affect crop growth, especially in alkaline soils. The metabolic resistance to chlorsulfuron is often inherited by a single dominant gene, as observed in certain sorghum genotypes. Despite its efficacy, chlorsulfuron can cause significant physiological changes in plants, including alterations in free amino acid content and transcriptome changes unrelated to detoxification processes.
