Arsanilic acid, also known as 4-aminobenzenearsonic acid, is an organoarsenical compound primarily used in poultry production as a feed additive to enhance weight gain and improve meat pigmentation. It functions by inhibiting harmful bacterial growth in the intestines of animals. Structurally, arsanilic acid is a white or pale yellow crystalline powder containing 34.52% arsenic. Despite its benefits in animal husbandry, arsanilic acid poses environmental risks as it is largely excreted in animal manure and can lead to the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes. Monitoring its use is crucial to prevent adverse effects on both animals and humans due to potential toxicity. The compound's environmental behavior, including its photolysis and the toxicity of its metabolites, is an area of ongoing research.
