I am looking for a fluorescent cobalt ion indicator for a solution assay. What is the best option?

Newport Green DCF is typically the best choice. It can exhibit up to a 10-fold increase in fluorescence in the presence of cobalt, but it also exhibits this level of response with nickel. In fact, there are no dyes that are specific for cobalt; many indicator dyes, such as many of those for calcium, will also show a response to cobalt and other metal ions to at least a small extent. Thus it is important to control for other ions in the sample.
