Western blot analysis of ERVW-1 in, Lane 1: human Hela whole cell lysates, Lane 2: human K562 whole cell lysates, Lane 3: human SH-SY5Y whole cell lysates, Lane 4: human MCF-7 whole cell lysates. Electrophoresis was performed on a 5-20% SDS-PAGE gel at 70V (Stacking gel) / 90V (Resolving gel) for 2-3 hours. HERVs are a class of multiple sclerosis associated retroviruses. Reacts with a replication competent Human Endogenous Retrovirus (HERVW) isolated from placenta. The synthetic peptide sequence used as immunogen is taken from the virus envelope polyprotein sequence. Retroviral envelope proteins mediate receptor recognition and membrane fusion during early infection. Endogenous envelope proteins may have kept, lost or modified their original function during evolution. The HERVW endogenous envelope protein has retained its original fusogenic properties and participates in trophoblast fusion during placenta morphogenesis.
