CDK2, or Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 2, is a key member of the cyclin-dependent kinase family, which is essential for regulating cell cycle progression. CDK2 is particularly important for the transition from the G1 phase to the S phase and for the progression through the S phase of the cell cycle.
Cyclin O is a regulatory subunit that binds to CDK2, activating its kinase activity. The binding of Cyclin O to CDK2 is necessary for the proper functioning of CDK2, as cyclins regulate the activation and specificity of CDKs.
Together, the CDK2/Cyclin O complex is involved in regulating the cell cycle, although its specific roles and target substrates are less well-characterized compared to other CDK2/cyclin complexes. The CDK2/Cyclin O complex is thought to contribute to various cellular processes, including DNA replication and repair mechanisms.
