Oxidation of diclofenac sodium produces the metabolite 4'-hydroxy diclofenac) which demonstrates specific inhibition of Cox-2. Inhibition of Cox by diclofenac and 4'-hydroxy diclofenac suppresses prostaglandin E2 synthesis, producing anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
