Mevastatin (Compactin) inhibits HMGCR (HMG-CoA reductase) , induces apoptosis which in turn inhibits isoprenoid biosynthesis and therefore blocks protein isoprenylation and reduces plasma cholesterol levels in humans. Mevastatin causes cells to arrest early in the G1 phase.
