Supporting cell culture media manufacturing at scale

Reliable, high-volume supply of cell culture media is an important dependency for vaccine and biologics manufacturers. Sourcing disruptions can affect production timelines and output consistency. Process engineers and supply chain leads seek media formats available at scale, produced to consistent specifications, and supported by a manufacturing infrastructure designed to meet increasing global demand.

The Grand Island, NY facility is a large-scale, manufacturing-focused site designed to support powder, liquid, and Advanced Granulation Technology (AGT)  cell culture media production with the process controls and supply continuity that commercial bioprocessing programs depend on.

Facility highlights

Capabilities that enhance media production

The Grand Island facility's powder and liquid manufacturing suites are used to produce cell culture media at scale, support format flexibility across dry powder and liquid formats, and reduce supply risk for customers.

Powder manufacturing

Grand Island's powder manufacturing suites support production of dry powder media (DPM) and AGT media.

Dry powder media

Dedicated animal origin-free (AOF) dry powder and AGT manufacturing areas support high-volume DPM production runs. A large ribbon blender and 300 ft³ blender with FitzMill™ technology are two of the assets featured in our virtual tour for large-batch processing across AOF powder media product lines.

Advanced Granulation Technology media

Gibco AGT media is a proprietary granulated dry powder format designed to support improved dispersion and reduced dust generation during reconstitution. A recently completed 45,000+ sq. ft. AOF manufacturing expansion doubled manufacturing capacity to address increasing demand from vaccine and biologics manufacturers.

Liquid manufacturing

Liquid manufacturing supports both animal origin-containing and AOF cell culture media and supplements. Infrastructure highlighted in our virtual tour include a large volume liquid pasteurization area, a liquid tank room and filtration system, a core liquid serum pre-filtration room, and a core liquid finishing and packaging area.

Cell culture media

The AO small blender (300–700 kg) and dedicated finishing and packaging lines are featured in our virtual tour and are among the assets used to bring finished liquid media to customers across product configurations.

Supplements

Supplemental liquid products support cell culture workflows by offering consistent, characterized additives produced under the same quality and process controls applied to primary liquid media manufacturing at the site.

Pilot labs and services

Grand Island's pilot laboratory capabilities are designed to support customers working to bridge the gap between development-scale formulations and manufacturing-scale media. Gibco Rapid Prototyping Services offers on-site support for non-GMP media prototyping, custom formulation evaluation, and format conversion, enabling process development teams to assess formulation candidates and media modifications before committing to full manufacturing runs. These services are structured to reduce development timelines and support more confident scale-up planning.
