Upstream steps

Our global network of trusted suppliers and manufacturers supports the full upstream bioprocessing workflow—from media preparation and cell handling to harvest and filtration. We offer a comprehensive portfolio of high-purity water, buffers, salts, amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and specialized biological reagents, supporting the consistency, flexibility, and reliability needed to support robust cell growth and efficient clarification.

Media preparation is the formulation and sterilization of nutrient solutions that support cell growth, combining energy sources, micronutrients and growth factors into a controlled, sterile matrix. Typical chemical categories include high-purity waters, salts, minerals & vitamins, amino acids, carbohydrates, biological buffers, acids/bases for pH control, and supplements/biological reagents (growth factors, serum replacements).

Cell handling covers expansion, monitoring, and manipulation of living cultures, while harvest is the bulk removal of cells or cell broth from the production vessel for downstream processing. Common chemicals include biological buffers and salts for isotonic conditions, high-purity water, biological reagents (enzymes or detachment agents), acids/bases for pH adjustments, and surfactants or supplements to protect cell integrity during transfer.

Filtration removes cells, particulates, and debris and performs sterilizing or depth clarification prior to chromatography, relying on physical retention rather than chemistry for removal. Supporting chemistries include high-purity waters and biological buffers for rinsing and process fluids, as well as acids and bases for disinfecting filters.

Downstream steps

Backed by a broad supplier and manufacturing network, we support the various steps of downstream bioprocessing, including purification, viral safety, and final formulation. Our portfolio spans essential buffers and salts, high-purity water, chromatography resins, filtration membranes, and specialized process chemistries—enabling streamlined operations, robust performance, and confident scale-up from development through commercial production.

Capture chromatography is a purification step that selectively binds the target biomolecule (e.g., antibody) to a resin, concentrating and partially purifying it from the bulk harvest. Key chemical categories are biological buffers, salts and acids/bases to control pH and ionic strength for binding and elution, biological reagents (chromatography resins), occasional low-percentage solvents or denaturants for specific elutions, and high-purity water for formulation and washes.

Viral inactivation reduces viral infectivity to improve product safety, typically applied to bulk intermediate streams prior to further purification. Common chemistries used for viral inactivation can include acids (low-pH treatments), solvents and surfactants/emulsifiers (solvent/detergent methods), biological buffers and salts to stabilize product during treatment, and high-purity water for dilution and neutralization steps.

Polishing chromatography removes trace impurities, aggregates, and charge variants to achieve final purity and product homogeneity after capture and viral clearance. This step uses biological buffers, salts and acids/bases for fine control of binding/elution, biological reagents (specialized resins), occasional denaturants or solvents for targeted impurity removal, and high-purity waters for washes and buffer prep.

Viral filtration (nanofiltration) is a size-exclusion step that physically removes viruses from the product stream using dedicated membrane cartridges under controlled flow conditions. Process chemistries associated with this step include biological buffers and salts to maintain product stability and ionic conditions, high-purity water for rinses and buffer prep, surfactants or antifoams to limit membrane fouling, and cleaning agents & disinfectants for filter integrity and reconditioning.

UF/DF concentrates the product and exchanges it into the desired formulation buffer by size-based retention and diafiltration, enabling buffer replacement and volume reduction. Typical chemicals are biological buffers and salts for final formulation, high-purity waters for diafiltration, acids/bases for pH adjustment, and occasionally surfactants or stabilizing excipients to preserve product stability.

Fill-finish

Fill-finish is the sterile dispensing and final formulation of the drug substance into distribution containers under aseptic conditions, often including excipients for stability and patient safety. Key chemical categories are high-purity waters, biological buffers, stabilizers and excipients such as carbohydrates and amino acids, surfactants/emulsifiers to prevent surface adsorption, salts for tonicity, and cleaning agents & disinfectants for the sterile environment.

System cleaning and sanitization

System cleaning and sanitization (CIP/SIP) remove product residues, biofilms and microbial contamination from equipment between batches to protect product quality and patient safety. This relies on cleaning agents and disinfectants, acids and bases for pH-dependent cleaning chemistries, solvents or denaturants for organic residue removal, surfactants/emulsifiers to aid wetting and soil removal, and high-purity waters for rinsing to remove cleaning chemistries.
