T helper type 1 (Th1) cells and T helper type 2 (Th2) cells are both a lineage of CD4 effector T cells. Th1 and Th2 are involved in promoting cell-mediated immunity. Th1 cells secrete IFN-gamma, IL-2, IL-10, and TNF-alpha/beta, which are required for host defense against intracellular viral and bacterial pathogens. Th2 cells secrete IL-4, IL-5, IL-9, IL-13, and IL-17E/IL-15, which are required for humoral immunity and play an important role in coordinating the immune response to larger extracellular pathogens.
